Ceramic Hip Replacements - Make Life Move Fast!

For people leading an active life and enjoying daily activities, pain in the hips can become a pain in the neck. Hip problems are debilitating that make even normal activities like walking painful and difficult. Hips affected by arthritis are so painful that even thought of moving is dreadful for the sufferer. Hip replacements can relieve the condition to a great extent. A few years back, implants were considered to be ideal for people over sixty five years of age, but now with the invention of ceramic hip replacements, young patients can enjoy the benefits of a replacement implant as well.

The course of action in ceramic hip replacement remains more or less the same as the conventional surgeries. The hip joint is accessed to through a lateral or mediolateral approach. The femoral head is manipulated out of the acetabular socket. Both the hip surfaces are then prepared for the replacement implant. The acetabular socket is replaced with a metal socket lined by ceramic. The femoral metal implant is inserted in the femoral bone after removing the damaged bone. The femoral metal head is lined with ceramic. Both the components are coupled to form a functional ceramic hip joint.

Orthopedic experts believe that ceramic bearings are wear resistant. Release of minute particles from bearing surface is a normal phenomenon but ceramics have the property of generating very less wear debris particles on friction. The smooth ceramic surfaces are also comparatively less affected by the friction forces. Reduced wear rate helps prolong the implant life. Young and active patients are the most benefited with ceramic implants. However old age is not a complication for ceramic-on-ceramic hip implants.
