Ceramic Artificial Hips - Strong Material, Sturdy Implant!

Ceramic is a research-based material developed for making joint implants. This new hip implant material is scientifically developed and tested through hip simulators. Ceramics are considered to be a better material than any other contemporary joint implant material. Implants made of ceramic tend to last longer than other implants. Artificial hips and joints can have ceramic in any component combinations; Ceramic-on-ceramic implants have both the bearing surfaces made of ceramic. Metal implants are thought to be strong, hence ceramic can be incorporated with metals to include the characteristics of both the materials. Ceramic artificial hips, whether with metal or without metal, have shown promising results.

Any two moving surfaces in contact are liable to damage because of friction wear. The same principle applies to the hip joint. The femoral head that moves inside the acetabulum gradually erodes due to the friction between the bearing surfaces. The force releases very fine implant material particles. These particles are potentially harmful to the body and the implant. The debris particles evoke tissue responses which, through a chain of events, leads to implant loosening and failure. A ceramic artificial hip overcomes all these shortcomings of the existent implants in use.

The ceramic-on-metal joint implants incorporate the advantages of metals and ceramic both. The implant is sturdy and long lasting with low friction wear rates. The implant generates wear particles which are less in number and very minute, escaping the body’s immune mechanism. The short term data available indicates that the damage to the ceramic head is negligible even after several years of joint activity. Ceramics are very beneficial to young patients, and there is no longer the need for them to wait until older age for surgery. The incidence of revision surgery may reduce drastically with ceramic used to replace joints.
