A modern lifestyle with modern technology has helped people increase their life expectancy. The result is large population of old age people with age related problems. As well, the lifestyle makes the young generation prone to disease conditions. Hip ailments are the most experienced condition in the geriatric age group, which includes conditions such as arthritis, inflammation and injury of any kind to the hips. Disease-related pain gets in the way of performance of daily activities. The condition calls for artificial hip replacements that replace the damaged joint with man-made implants.

Currently, there are many types of implants available for an artificial hip replacement implant. The implant can be a metal-on-polyethylene type which is the oldest one and still in use. Artificial implants can also be devised from metals and ceramic. Metals like cobalt, chromium and nickel are used in varying proportions to form alloy for implant. These metals are comparatively inert materials so that they do not stir up any immune response to the implant. Ceramics are the recent ones to join the list and have gained much popularity in a very short period of time. Ceramic and metals can also be used in a combination to enhance the properties of the implants.

Artificial hips provide a much wanted relief from nagging pains in the damaged hip. The patients are able to enjoy daily activities and resume their active life. However, there are a few restrictions that need to be abided by lifelong. Patients with replacement hips are not allowed to participate in rigorous physical activities. The movements are modified a bit to suit their kind of artificial implant. There is always a risk of implant dislocation, and its failure may require revision surgery.
