Non-Invasive Hip Replacements – Smaller The Better

Minimally or non-invasive hip replacement refers to the surgical replacement of an arthritic hip through a 3-5 inch incision instead of a traditional 10-12 inch incision. Non-invasive hip replacements and implants are replacing the traditional method of hip replacement because of certain advantages, like less pain and early recovery.

With non-invasive replacements, recovery is less painful, and patients can go home within 3 days of hip impalnts. Patients can even resume driving in four to six weeks, much earlier in comparison with the traditional method of replacing hips. There is less tissue injury compared to traditional method and tissue healing is also faster, reducing scar size on the hips to 3-4 inches. Hip replacements and implants in this technique move more freely and wear out much slower.

There is no added risk for a minimally invasive hip implant when compared with traditional hip replacement. If a surgeon has difficulty obtaining satisfactory implant placement during this type of minimally invasive surgery, he or she can always lengthen the incision to gain better access and exposure to the joint. Post-operative care is similar for the surgery but physical therapy can be carried out more aggressively for early recovery.

Restrictions of standard protocol do apply but there are no additional restrictions on the hips. With metal-on-metal 38mm implants, implant dislocations are rare and can be treated without open surgery.
