Hip Resurfacing Technology – Maintain Your Active Lifestyle

Surgery using hip resurfacing technology is a boon for younger, more active patients requiring hip replacement. In patients with diseased hips, resurfacing technology provides the patient with a natural range of hip motion and allows them to return to previous activity levels.

In traditional hip replacement surgery, the hip bone socket and the ball of the thigh bone are removed to make way for the artificial hip implant. In surgery using resurfacing technology, only the diseased portions of the hips are removed. After the doctors resurfaces the hip, the reshape it.Then the surfaces that come in contact at the hip joint are resurfaced with metal.

With the resurfacing technique, bone loss is minimized to preserve the natural biomechanics of the hip joint. As a result, hip resurfacing surgeries permit early and greater mobility. Further, hip resurfacing gives the patient a more durable hip, as the metal hips are more wear resistant.

Younger patients who have undergone hip replacement often need a repeat replacement or repair due to implant wear and loosening. Therefore, young patients with active lifestyles may benefit the most by hip resurfacing surgeries. As maximum amount of natural bone stock is preserved, the hip resurfacing surgery also allows an option to be converted to traditional total hip replacement if ever there is a need of hi revision.

Methods to resurface the hip have been available for many years but was not so popular because of the unavailability of required resurfacing prosthesises. Recent advancements in engineering and resurfacing materials are the reasons behind the virtual rebirth of this resurfacing technology. It should not surprise us if more surgeons offer hip resurfacing to younger, active patients who require hip replacements.
