Hip Replacement Operations – Small Incisions, Big Relief!

Among operations on the bone, hip replacement operations hold a great position because of the significance of the hip. Loss of hip function causes severe disability, especially in people who lead active lifestyles. Hip replacements and implants help many retain their mobility.

The conventional hip replacement operation for implants begins with a long surgical incision over the hip, several inches to a foot in length. These wide incisions facilitate access to the hip joint, where an implant can be placed. Using long incisions on the hip allows easier removal of the diseased hip joint components and easier replacement with an artificial hip implant. There are many disadvantages associated with these hip implants operations. Conventional hip replacement surgeries and operations cut across the large muscles of the thigh. As a result, long incisions used in this replacement operation mean more blood loss, greater tissue injury, higher chances of postoperative infection as well as delayed healing.

Minimally invasive surgery for hip replacement uses incisions no longer than four inches to reach the hip joint in the operation. As would be expected, there are numerous advantages for patients undergoing hip replacements with minimally invasive hip operations. There is less blood loss during the operation and easier healing of the incision and hips. The patient is also able to walk much earlier.

However, it does not mean there are no downsides to this operation. Replacements done by minimally invasive methods require a greater expertise on the part of the surgeon performing the operation. Surgeons have less room to operate and place the implant in position. But in case of any difficulty, the surgeon always has the option of extending the implant incision.
