Organic Hip Replacements - Get Back To Nature

Hip implants are required to replace diseased or damaged hips that cause painful movements. The hips are replaced with artificial hips principally made of metal, polyethylene or ceramic. The artificial hip replacements are seldom considered a body part. Even the body does not accept the replacement fully and reveals its dejection through loosening and implant failure. Researchers believe that if somehow a natural implant could be devised, the problems associated with artificial replacements could be overcome. The natural, or organic hip replacements could better tune up with the body tissue.

To develop a natural hip implant is not an easy task. All the components of an organic hip replacement implant need to be able to regenerate to form a replacement hip. Previous researchers have rendered bone tissue with growing properties. Apart from it, the supporting structure of bones, namely cartilage and ligaments, have to be grown in vitro. The most difficult component to grow is the cartilage because it dies on freezing. Cartilage is the shock absorber of the hips, facilitating a smooth sliding between the hip elements. Cow hooves are being experimented on to isolate a cartilage growth factor. The days are near when a whole hip could be available as a spare part in some bank of body parts.

Natural implants for hips would be like any other body part and once implanted it would be incorporated into the body as its own. This would spare the replacement implant from tissue rejection. Like any other joint in the body, organic implants are supposed to last for a lifetime. There would be no issue of wear debris from implants and eventually no implant failure. With natural hip implants, young people may be able to enjoy an active life rather than suffering with a handicapped hip.
