Long Lasting Implants - To Last Longer Than Life

Hip replacement implants have three components, namely the acetabular cup, the femoral head and the femoral stem fitting into the femoral shaft. The ideal implants used for hip replacements should be long lasting implants with superior strength and endurance. An ideal implant should be able to provide a smooth functioning joint that will last for a lifetime. The majority of hip implants need a revision surgery, as the implant no longer aids in painless movements. Older patients are preferred for surgery due to the short life span of the available implants. Non-availability of an ideal long lasting implant keeps young patients waiting for hip replacements. These factors necessitate an ideal hip implant that overcomes all these shortcomings.

The Oxinium hip implant is the outcome of an fifteen year long effort in the field of biomechanical development and testing and puts an end to the pursuit of an ideal implant. Developed by British researchers, this implant lasts longer and delays the need for a repeat replacement surgery to replace the damaged implant. The characteristic feature of the Oxinium implant is its resistance to abrasion and ability to withstand wear and tear processes. The long lasting nature of these replacements makes them suitable for use in young patients also. The metal is hard but provides a smooth functionality to the hip joint. Unlike conventional implants, the oxinium implant is made of non detectable traces of nickel, which prevents any possibility of tissue reaction. Potential candidates for hip replacement can now think of an implant that lasts longer, provides better mobility and is hard wearing.
