Hip Revision Surgeries - Remake Life!
Hip replacement implants have a long life span, but will eventually need to be changed. Due to the daily activity related wear and tear, the implant loosens, making mobility painful. In rare cases, bacteria may invade the bone tissue surrounding the implant, making it necessary for an operation. Hip revision surgeries aim to replace the old and painful worn out hip implant with a new one that eases movement at the hips.
It is estimated that among the large number of hip replacements done, a significant number fall under the category of hip revision surgery. Revision surgery has benefited many patients in restoring their normal activity level and decreasing pain in the hips.
Hip revision operations involve replacing all the parts of an earlier hip implant, namely the femur head, femoral stem and the acetabular component. Revision surgeries for hips entail added risks also. These operations may increase the risk of infection and implant dislocation, causing more blood loss and sometimes shortening of the leg. But once the old hip implant is loose, there is no option left other than a revision surgery.
This dynamic field of knowledge has grown at a tremendous pace, rendering revision surgeries of the hip more successful. The sciences of radiology and computers have devised tools to image and predict worn out hip implants. Bone banks are becoming more active in providing morcellised or donor bone tissue for revision operations as the recipients outnumber the bone donors. Genetic science is mobilizing its resources to find a genetic basis for loosening hip replacements. Theses studies suggest that a definite treatment will shortly be at hand, and the operation will no longer be necessary.
