Anterior Hip Replacement - A Favorable Approach
Conventional hip replacement surgery entails a lateral or posterior approach to the hip joint for replacing it. In this process, many muscle layers are severed and damaged. The detached muscle takes a very long time to heal itself imposing the countless restriction of activity in post operative period. The anterior hip replacement on the other hand, offers an anterior approach to the hips for replacement surgery. The surgeon can work on the implant between the muscle fibres eliminating the need for cutting it. The muscle of the hip or the femur is also spared from being detached. As a result the muscle recovers faster with few complications. The post operative complications are few and the outcome is usually uneventful.
Anterior hip replacements and implants are advantageous in many ways. Risk of implant dislocation is reduced, as the supporting structures are intact. The post operative restrictions are limited as the hip needs comparatively lesser time to heal. The activities could be resumed as soon as comfortable. The patient need not wait for six to eight weeks as in the case of conventional hip implant surgery. The patient can move the hip without any precautions when climbing, sitting in car or during using the bathroom. The anterior approach allows early weight bearing and resumption of daily activities. These replacements may be especially beneficial to people suffering from painful hip movements, stiffness, arthritis and restricted mobility.
First performed in Europe, anterior approach to hip has benefited many patients across the world. The implants surgery has advanced in all aspects from its primordial state. Recent researches have added new perspective to the most opted technique of implant replacements.
