Wear Resistant Implants - Durable And Strong

Hip replacement surgery is intended to provide a better activity level, as well as freedom from pain and inconvenience. As soon as activities are resumed, the process of wear and tear begins causing progressive damage and corrosion to the implant. The byproducts of this process are wearing debris particles. Owing to its biological activity, an immune response is stirred up against the hip implant. The body considers the implant as foreign material and rejects it. This causes bone resorption, loss of interface and finally loosening of the implant. This calls for the need of wear resistant implants and replacements that could defy the corrosive forces of the body activity. The ideal hip replacement implant should be able to resist corrosion and withstand against friction. In addition, the hip replacement implant should also be biocompatible.

Implants with alumina as their component serve as a remarkably wear resistant implant. Alumina is a highly inert material which can resist wear, thus reducing the chances of tissue inflammation and implant rejection. Alumina can be polished to provide a wear and tear resistant surface on which the other component can freely slide. Applied as an integrating material for femoral head replacements, wear rates with ultra high molecular weight polyethylene acetabulums is notably decreased. It also drastically cuts down the rate of revision surgeries performed. The porous type of alumina bears bone spaces into which new bone cells can grow in toning up the bond between body tissue an the implant. Being a corrosion resistant alloy, alumina makes an indispensable constituent of wear resistant hip replacement implants. Apart from orthopedic surgery, alumina has wide array of application fields. The property to resist activity related friction makes it an excellent choice for people with more than active lifestyle.
