Hip Implant Biomaterials - Unlimited Options

Biomaterials are biological molecules, such as proteins and complex sugars, used to make medical devices, including structural elements. In surgery, a biomaterial is a synthetic material used to replace part of a living system or to function in intimate contact with living tissue. Hip implant biomaterials are man-made substances used to substitute the hip joint, in whole or a part of it, in order to provide better joint stability and mobility at hips. With more younger people opting for the hip replacement surgery, the need for a strong, durable hip implant and replacement has intensified studies in the field of biomaterials. The aim is to increase the life span of the hip replacements with a strong hip implant biomaterial.

The invention of biomaterials has invaded every field of science, including the applications. The biomaterials used in hip implants and replacements are basically of three types. Metal alloys form the femoral stems, as they provide strength and endurance that allow the patients to carry out daily activities. Ceramic biomaterials like alumina have been utilized in articulating the surfaces of implants and replacements, due to their solidity and resistance to wear and tear. Ceramic surfaces also provide a framework for osseointegration. The third component is the polymer-like ultra high molecular weight polyethylene. The characteristic feature of the polymer is their elasticity and firmness that offers frictionless joint mobility to hip replacement implants. These biomaterials form the main components of any hip replacements. A distinctive feature common to all these biomaterials is that all are biocompatible; it does not elicit an inflammatory response, as the body deems the material to be natural. This biomaterial property helps the implant to exist with the living tissue of the hip joint.
