Post Surgery Procedures - A Journey Towards Better Health

The post operative period is a very crucial phase from a prognostic point of view. The maximum benefits of the surgery in terms of restoration of activities depend on the efficacy of care provided after the procedure. Post surgery procedures decide the prospective gains from the operation. The patient is detained in the post operative room for two hours and pain killers administered at frequent intervals. The bandaged hip is checked regularly for any leakage after the procedure, and the patient is then shifted to the hospital ward.

These surgeries require the patient to maintain an appropriate position with a pillow between the legs after the procedure. The patient may lie on his side with the operated hip facing up. Following hip operations, the catheter remains in situ for two days and the patient is advised to use a bedpan for his elimination needs. These post operative procedures may limit your activities and may feel troublesome. From the second day after the operation the patient would not require a catheter and bedpan. The nurse will examine the bandage and apply a new dressing. On the third post operation day, a hip X-ray would be taken and reviewed by the surgeon. The patients are usually discharged on the forth to fifth day after operation.

The physiotherapist plays a pivotal role in each post surgery procedure. On the first day of surgery, the patient is taught various foot and ankle exercises. The physiotherapist advises certain activities to protect the hip after surgery. The patient is ambulated to the bedside chair and taught the safest way to do so. The procedures on the second day of operation include walking to the bathroom with the help of a walker. The patient is gradually ambulated to walk with crutches and is taught special maneuvers to ease daily activities like climbing stairs.
