Artificial Hip Implants - Simulate The Natural!
Hip replacement surgeries, or total hip arthroplasty, involve replacing the damaged hip joint with artificial hip implants and replacements. The operation is indicated for painful, diseased and damaged hips that makes daily activities a painful ordeal. A preoperative work up is required, including investigations and a detailed medical examination to assess the suitability to the surgery. The two to three hours replacement surgery involves removing the damaged joint and replacing it with a fake femur head and acetabulum. The patient is usually shifted to the ward once out of anesthesia effects. The initial restriction in activities may be a little troublesome at times, but this phase may soon be over.
The period of rehabilitation is very important for the artificial hip implant. The physiotherapist teaches the various strengthening and weight bearing exercises in order to put minimum strain on the artificial implant or replacement. Some modifications are required to be made at home. Avoid positions that may dislocate the implant. Gradually by six to eight weeks, normal activities could be resumed. The surgeon reviews and advises the range of activities possible. However, a few activities that exert extra stress on the hips need to be avoided indefinately.
The implant replacements have few risks involved with them. A blood clot may form in the leg vessels due to inactivity and should be prevented by exercise and use of compression devices. If infection of the prosthesis occurs, it calls for a change of the artificial implant. Loosening and dislocation of the replacement may occur over time. The implant replacement may cause shortening of the limb that could be surgically corrected if it happens. Breaking of artificial implants or replacements is rare but should it happen, a second surgery is mandatory. Besides these risks, the majority of replacements have good long term results.
