Orthopedic Hip Surgery - Smarten Up Your Bone!
Hip surgeries have become quite common these days. Among orthopedic hip surgery, total hip replacement has its own special place. Total hip replacement involves switching the damaged hip with an artificial implant. The operation itself has various approaches and a wide variety of implants to choose from. The surgery takes around two hours for the procedure and following the surgery the patient has to undergo a rigorous training session. The training given by physiotherapists helps the patients learn to walk with the implant and perform activities as permitted by the range of motion possible for the implant. The activities are modified in order to decrease the activity related stress on the hip implant. Physiotherapy is an ongoing process after the operation and completes when the patient becomes independent.
Most of the implants used in orthopedic hip surgeries are biocompatible. In spite of that, many implants evoke an inflammatory response identifying the implant as foreign. These immune reactions cause bone resorption, leading to operation implant failure. The daily activity produces wear debris that are biologically active. Their interaction with the body contributes to loosening of the implant. Once an implant loosens, movements become painful and activity gets restricted. The remedy is revision surgery. The science of orthopedics has come up with many innovations to overcome the drawbacks.
Conventional hip implants operations have many drawbacks, but they are now using innovative implants having metal-on-metal bearing, ceramic implants. The hip operation also had a conventional long incision approach, but now the minimally invasive approach is more popular. There are implants available for strengthening the severed soft tissue from the operations as well. There are new inventions everyday in the field of orthopedics.
