Hip Replacement Recovery - Get Back To Life!!!

Recovery from surgery is a matter of hard work and is dependent on many factors. The preoperative work up, the actual procedure of hip replacement and uneventful post operative period all combined contribute towards hip replacement recovery. The physiological status of the patient before the surgery is essential in deciding their rate of recovery after implant replacement. People with any unstable medical condition tend to fare poorly after the hips replacement. Any negligence by the operating team during surgery may have adverse effects on patient’s recovery. The negligence can be in terms of aseptic techniques or use of any faulty instrument. The restrictions posed on an individual, if not abided by may also lead to problems in recovery after implant surgery.

The type of surgery done on the hips has a major role in hip replacements recovery. The traditional surgeries require a longer recovery time as compared to the newer techniques. After the minimal invasive surgery, hospitalization for one day is required whereas with conventional hip replacements, at least five days are needed. Patients undergoing the minimal approach can resume normal activities within two weeks, unlike the traditional approach, where it takes six to eight weeks. The patient’s compliance with the instructions given has shown to speed up recovery after hip implants.

It is seen that people who are well aware of their condition are cooperative with the health team. An educative counseling session with the patient before implant surgery may help him develop logical expectations from the surgery. This may alleviate apprehension associated with perioperative procedures and the time required for recovery of the hips. The patient’s role in hip implants recovery should be acknowledged.
