Safe Hip Replacements - Hip Out Of Harm’s Way!

Hip replacement surgeries are the procedure in which dysfunctional hip joints are replaced with an artificial hip implant. The surgery is performed by giving a twelve inch long incision, severing through the muscle and other soft tissue and approaching the hip joint. The implant is placed by preparing a surface on the left over healthy bone. The long incision makes the wound more prone for infection. The approach is through the soft tissue and hence the damage to it is vast. This in turn takes a longer time to heal and provides less support to the implant. The rehabilitation also takes an extended time. The patient takes more time to return to his normal activities. Hence, implants with smaller incisions are safe hip replacements.

The small incisions are safer as compared to the longer ones in hip implant replacements. Nowadays, orthopedic surgeons prefer smaller incisions for the safety purpose. Small incisions damage very few soft tissue structures and heal very quickly. Moreover, the support structures of hips are retained, making it easy for recovery. The hospitalization time is remarkably reduced with the patient going back home in less than twenty four hours. The patients are able to walk around the next day and are back to daily activities within a short period of two weeks. Replacements using small incisions is a safe hip replacement as the chances of infection are less.

Incisions in hip implants surgery vary with the type of surgery, the operating surgeon’s preference and the type of artificial hips being implanted. The size of the incision in hip replacement implants may vary between twelve to two inches depending on many factors.
