Long Lasting Replacements - Extending The Life Span

Hip replacements are not a one-time procedure. Implants usually made of metal-on-metal or metal-on-plastic wear out with time. There are many reasons why the implant will not last a long time. The friction between two implant surfaces causes release of wear particles from the implants. The particles can generate an immune response that can increase the rate of bone resorption. When the bones around the implant get decayed, the implant loosens and may dislocate. The replacement then requires a revision surgery. The phenomenon is mostly seen in active patients. The need arises for long lasting replacements that may last for a lifetime.

Ceramic is a new material being tried for making long lasting replacement implants. The laboratory tests and computer simulation models of a ceramic implant prove it to be long lasting. The reason is low wear rates. The two surfaces do not allow for much wear debris, the implants are stronger and it lasts much longer than conventional implants. The ceramic implant has an inner metal back up that provides stability and allows it to last under extra stress. Ceramic hip implants are mostly indicated for young active patients, however old age is no contraindication for this long lasting implant.

The research is still on for the ideal implant that lasts longer. Scientists are trying various combinations of metals and other materials in order to increase the life span of the replacement implants. The ideal implant is one which is strong, durable, long lasting and biocompatible. The implant should have low wear rate and resistant to friction forces. It may take few years before the patients waiting for hip replacements heave a sigh of relief.
