- Metallic Hip Resurfacing – An Alternative To Replacement
A new technique that has been proposed as an alternative to conventional hip replacement surgery is the metallic hip resurfacing surgery. Also known as “metal on metal” hip resurfacing, this technique has the advantage that it can be offered to younger persons who are in need of a total hip replacement or implant, but in whom there is a greater chance of the implants not lasting the patient’s lifetime. - Ceramic Hip Joints – Stronger, Last Longer!
The normal hip joint, made up of two components, is a ball-and-socket type of joint. The acetabulum of the pelvic bone forms a socket in which the head of the thigh bone sits like a ball. When hips becomes painful and dysfunctional, due to diseases such as arthritis or due to trauma, replacement of the diseased hip joint is recommended for a painless hip. Ceramic hip joints are artificial hip implants that bone surgeons use to replace diseased hips. These implants have components that are identical to the natural bony hip joint in structure and function. Author: Dr. Bharat Sharma - Date: 02/05/2005
- Durable Hip Implants – Last A Lifetime
Sir John Charnley performed the first total hip replacement nearly four decades ago. In spite of technical advances in the design of artificial hip implants and replacements, we continue to see failure of these implants over time. Approximately 10% of total hip replacements fail in the first ten years, and another 30 to 40% over the next ten years. The search for durable hip implants is still on. - Hip Replacement Differences – Cemented Or Uncemented
Hip replacement is performed on patients who have severe hip pain due to arthritis that does not respond to conservative measures. When a patient is considered for a hip replacement, differences exist in the techniques and variations of implants chosen by the surgeon for different patients.
